Is there a train along Amalfi Coast?

The best way to reach the Amalfi Coast is to take a train to Naples or Salerno train station and then get on one of the local buses that will take you to the main coastal towns. The only town on the Amalfi Coast that has a train station is Vietri sul Mare, but this is at the eastern-most edge of the Amalfi Coast.

Strictly speaking, there is no train line that runs through the towns of the Amalfi Coast (such as Positano, Amalfi, or Ravello) because of the sheer cliffs and rugged terrain. The closest railway stations are in Sorrento to the west and Salerno to the east. To reach the Amalfi Coast in 2026, most travelers take a high-speed train from Rome or Naples to Salerno and then transfer to a ferry or a SITA bus. Alternatively, you can take the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Naples to Sorrento and then hop on a bus. However, 2026 sees the launch of a new, ultra-exclusive Venice Simplon-Orient-Express route that travels from Paris to the Amalfi region; while the train itself terminates near Pompeii, it includes a private boat transfer directly to Positano as part of the "Orient Express" experience. For everyday travel, the most scenic "train-like" way to see the coast is actually by ferry, as it allows you to avoid the notorious traffic on the narrow "Road of a Thousand Bends" while enjoying the postcard views from the water.
