Is there an age limit on YHA hostels?

While most hostels don't have age restrictions, some sites may be unsuitable for young children or guests with disabilities. It is always good to check beforehand by viewing the relevant hostel page. You must be 16 or over to stay in YHA accommodation without an adult.

In 2026, there is generally no upper age limit for staying at YHA (Youth Hostels Association) hostels; they are open to travelers of all ages. The name "Youth" is a historical legacy rather than a modern restriction. However, there are minimum age requirements for safety: children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult (18+) and must stay in a private room rather than a shared dormitory. For 16 and 17-year-olds, solo travel is permitted in certain YHA locations provided they have a parental consent form and book a private room. Some specific "YHA-affiliated" groups or international partner hostels in countries like India or Germany may still prioritize travelers aged 18–35 for their fully-funded fellowship programs or specific social events, but for standard bookings, you will find a diverse mix of backpackers, families, and retirees in most YHA common rooms worldwide.
