Life is incredibly resilient, and simple organisms have been found everywhere from Antarctica to the bottom of mines; even the so-called Dead Sea supports 'salt-loving' haloarchaea microorganisms. There is one part of the world where nothing thrives, however: the Atacama Desert in Chile.

In the Dallol–Danakil area in Ethiopia, researchers found that the hot, saline, and highly acidic ponds found in a volcanic crater are too extreme for life to take hold. Genetic sequencing was used to verify the absence of any organisms. Researchers also found no life in the adjacent brine lakes.
