Is there security at the Statue of Liberty?

A secondary security screening site is located at the entrance of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. Submission to secondary security screening is required for those entering the Monument with Crown or Pedestal Access passes.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE FOR THE SECURITY SCREENING PROCESS? Depends on the number of people in the screening facility but once inside you can expect an average 5-10 minutes depending on the time of year. If you follow the security screening guidelines it will keep the line moving.

A trip up to the crown includes walking up a double-helix spiral staircase. The Statue's Crown can only be accessed by climbing 162 stairs. There is no elevator service to the Crown. The climb is strenuous.

I don't think people realize just how steep and tight the stairway up is! The statue museum is amazing and it was just surreal to see it up close! The views from the ferry are better... but it is so worth it to plan ahead and book tickets to climb to the crown at least once in your life!

Make sure to keep your visit to the statue shorter, so it's closer to 2 1/2 hours, and you can save some time for Ellis Island. To see all of Ellis Island would take a few hours. But if you're in a rush and don't want to skip it, I'd say 1 hour to see the highlights.
