The train journey from Geneva to Zermatt is exceptionally scenic, offering a stunning transition from the cosmopolitan shores of Lake Geneva to the heart of the high Alps. The first portion of the trip typically follows the "arc" of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), providing passengers with beautiful views of the water, the famous Jet d'Eau if you are looking back toward the city, and the terraced vineyards of Lavaux, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. As the train moves toward Martigny and Sion, you are surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and ancient castles perched on hillsides. However, the true highlight begins when you change trains at Visp or Brig to board the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. This narrow-gauge railway climbs steeply through the Matter Valley (Mattertal), crossing over impressive bridges and through deep gorges. As the train nears the car-free village of Zermatt, the iconic, pyramid-shaped peak of the Matterhorn eventually comes into view, providing one of the most famous vistas in the world. The entire journey takes about three and a half to four hours, and the large panoramic windows on most Swiss trains ensure you don't miss any of the breathtaking glacial landscapes.
