Is Tron more thrilling than Space Mountain?

The ride is adjacent to Space Mountain, Disney's original high-thrill coaster, which will make comparisons inevitable. Tron is smoother and much faster – Space Mountain maxes out at a relatively tame 27 mph. But the nostalgic in me preferred the jerky, in-the-dark dips and turns of Space Mountain.

Whether TRON Lightcycle / Run is more thrilling than Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom is a matter of "speed versus chaos." From a technical standpoint, TRON is much faster, featuring a high-speed launch that reaches nearly 60 mph (97 km/h) in seconds, making it one of the fastest coasters in any Disney park. Its thrill comes from the unique "motorcycle" seating position and the sensation of soaring through a high-tech "Grid" with smooth, sweeping curves. Space Mountain, however, offers a different type of thrill: it is an older, "jerky" wild-mouse style coaster that operates almost entirely in pitch darkness. While its top speed is only about 27 mph (43 km/h), the lack of visibility makes every turn and drop feel much more intense and unpredictable. In 2026, many thrill-seekers find TRON's launch to be the superior adrenaline rush, but Space Mountain remains a classic for its "rattling" intensity and the psychological fear of the unknown. If you prefer smooth, modern speed, TRON is the winner; if you like a classic, bumpy ride that keeps you guessing, Space Mountain still holds the crown.

It feels fast, but smoother than Big Thunder and Space Mountain. Tron is definitely not a family coaster. It has a height restriction of 48 first of all, and the launch is as intense as many extreme coasters. Seven Dwarfs and Slinky Dog are family coasters.

There's nothing slow about this ride. If you have a thrill seeker who enjoys speed, Tron will not be too scary for them. One thing to note: it's a relatively short ride that truly only lasts 60 seconds once in motion. So even if Tron turns out to be scary, it should be a very short experience.

TRON does move up and down a fair bit, but there's very little of that “stomach-drop” feeling with your feet leaving the floor. That's for two reasons. The first is that on a Lightcycle your head points down, not your feet. But the bigger reason is that almost all of TRON's rise-and-drop motion includes a turn.
