Ueno is generally considered very safe at night, as is the case with most of Tokyo. The area around Ueno Park and the main station remains well-lit and active with commuters and diners late into the evening. However, like any major urban hub, it has specific pockets to be mindful of. The area to the southwest of Ueno Station, particularly near the "Ameyoko" market and the adjacent nightlife districts, can become a bit "seedy" or "downmarket" after dark. You may encounter "touts" or bouncers outside bars and "snack" clubs who can be persistent, though they are rarely aggressive or dangerous. For a solo traveler, the primary risk is rarely physical safety but rather the potential for being overcharged in a "tourist trap" bar. As long as you stay in well-populated areas and use common sense, Ueno offers a charming, historic atmosphere that is perfectly safe for a nighttime stroll.
