For an 8-year-old, the choice between Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World depends on their height and thrill-seeking appetite. At age 8, most children are around 50–52 inches (127–132 cm), which is the "magic number" for height requirements. At Universal, an 8-year-old can finally ride many of the "big" attractions like Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure or Jurassic World VelociCoaster (if they are exceptionally tall and brave). Universal's "Epic Universe" (opened in 2025) offers Super Nintendo World, which is a massive hit for this age group. Disney, however, remains the gold standard for "storytelling" and immersive dark rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. If your child prefers the whimsy of Mickey Mouse and the Disney Princesses, Disney is still the better choice. If they have outgrown "kiddie rides" and are obsessed with Harry Potter, Super Mario, or intense roller coasters, Universal will likely be more exciting for an 8-year-old.
