Should I go to Limerick or Galway?

Although Limerick has several hidden gems and fun spots to visit, Galway is a much better choice for most people visiting Ireland. The streets of Galway are full of interesting shops, tasty restaurants serving both Irish and international cuisine, and several fabulous coffee shops.

Choosing between Limerick and Galway depends on whether you prefer a gritty, historic city or a bohemian, tourist-friendly coastal hub. Galway is widely considered the "cultural heart" of Ireland, famous for its colorful shopfronts, buskers, and proximity to the stunning Connemara region and Aran Islands. It is vibrant and festive, though it can feel overcrowded and is notably expensive in 2026 due to its popularity. Limerick, while historically having a "grittier" reputation, has undergone a significant transformation into a sleek, cultural destination. It offers incredible history at King John’s Castle and world-class sporting atmosphere at Thomond Park. Limerick is generally more affordable and serves as a better "undiscovered" base for exploring the Wild Atlantic Way and the Cliffs of Moher. If you want a non-stop party and traditional Irish "trad" sessions, go to Galway; if you want deep history, a local feel, and better value for your money, choose Limerick.
