For most travelers, especially first-time visitors to Italy, Rome deserves significantly more time than Milan. Rome is a sprawling open-air museum with 2,800 years of history; you need at least 3 to 4 full days just to see the "essentials" like the Colosseum, Vatican City, and Trastevere. Milan, while a vibrant global fashion and financial hub, can often be "seen" in 1 to 2 days, with the primary highlights being the Duomo, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and "The Last Supper" mural. Rome offers a more "classic" Italian experience with its ancient ruins and winding cobblestone streets, whereas Milan feels more like a modern European metropolis. However, Milan is an excellent hub for day trips to Lake Como or the Swiss Alps. If your trip is 7 days long, a common 2026 recommendation is to spend 4 nights in Rome and 1-2 nights in Milan at the tail end of your trip before flying out of Malpensa airport.
