Should I stay in Menaggio or Varenna?

Varenna is more strikingly beautiful with its fjord coast and Varenna has more to offer, especially for a town its size, but Menaggio has a lovely promenade and flat area for seniors. Menaggio is more convenient for your drive to Switzerland – The Val d'Intelvi between Lakes Como and Lugano is stunning.

Varenna is smaller and quieter, with a higher ratio of visitors to locals (which can sometimes make it harder to avoid the tourist trappings). It is more picturesque, but the hillside would probably be slightly harder to navigate if your in-laws have any mobility issues.
