Should you bring your car to Block Island?

Cars are allowed on the island, but roads are narrow, winding, and without shoulders, and drivers must contend with runners and flocks of bicycles and mopeds. Unless your party includes people with mobility problems or small children, we recommend leaving your car on the mainland and joining the two-wheelers.

Bringing a car to Block Island is generally not recommended for most visitors, and in peak season, it’s actively discouraged or restricted. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

The Short Answer:

No, for the vast majority of visitors. The island is small, cars are a hassle to transport, parking is very limited and expensive, and better alternatives exist.

Key Reasons to Leave Your Car on the Mainland:

  1. Ferry Logistics & Cost:

    • Expensive: The ferry fee for a car is very high (often $200+ round-trip in peak season) compared to the passenger fare.
    • Advanced Reservations Required: Car ferry spots are extremely limited and book up months in advance for summer weekends. You cannot just show up.
    • Long Wait Times: Loading and unloading cars is slow, adding to your travel time.
  2. Island Infrastructure:

    • Small Size: The island is only 7 miles long and 3 miles wide. Many destinations are easily accessible by other means.
    • Limited Parking: Public parking is scarce, especially in Old Harbor. Private parking lots are expensive (up to $30+ per day).
    • Congestion: Narrow, scenic roads get very congested in summer with bikes and mopeds. A car can be more of a burden than a convenience.
  3. Excellent Alternatives:

    • Bicycles: The perfect way to explore. You can bring your own on the ferry for a small fee or rent one easily on the island.
