Should you stay in Hvar or do a day trip?

If you want to experience some of the best nightclubs on Hvar, then it is best to stay overnight. If you are visiting Hvar on a daytrip from Split, there are still plenty of great places to spend your evening in Hvar Town before you catch the last ferry back. There are so many restaurants to choose from in Hvar Town.

Hvar to Split Ferries In the high season it runs 14 to 20 journeys per day, in total 131 times per week from Hvar. In the low season it runs 2 or 3 journeys per day, in total 17 times per week. Journey time is between 50 minutes and 2 hours 25 minutes depending on the route.

Overall, Hvar is generally livelier and attracts crowds that are looking for a good blend of nightlife, beach clubs, and culture. Meanwhile, Korcula is more aligned with the slower pace of island life, offering rich wine agriculture, and plenty of greenery.

Renting a car would be a waste of money as parking is difficult in Hvar Town. We rented a scooter for 2 days and explored the island that way - much better, cheaper, more fun, few cars on the road, and easy to park.

In general, driving on Hvar is problem-free, assuming one has adapted to the Dalmatian mentality. While Hvar Town remains the focus of tourism on the island of Hvar, attracting the rich and famous and often referred to as the new St. Tropez, there is much more to this magical island that the glitz of its main town.

The train station in Split is right across the ferry station in Split, where you can take a ferry to Stari Grad, or catamaran to Jelsa and Hvar city. Other option is to take a bus to Drvenik, (92 km from Split), where you can take a ferry to Sucuraj on Hvar island.

Hvar is enormous. We stayed in Hvar only for 2 days so didn't have the chance to wander to the other side of the island to Jelsa and beyond. To explore the local area of Hvar, Stari Grad, and Zarace we rented an ATV. The streets were perfect for it and better than the hassle of renting a car.

Most visitors tend to spend more time in Dubrovnik than Hvar because of the overall number of sights and activities. Usually, 2-4 days is a good amount of time for Hvar, and 1-5 days is enough time in Dubrovnik. Families should spend more time in Dubrovnik than Hvar.
