Several high-profile actors have famously purchased castles, but perhaps the most well-known (and often discussed) is Nicolas Cage, who at one point owned two. In 2006, Cage purchased Schloss Neidstein, a 28-room castle in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, Germany, for approximately $2.3 million. Shortly after, he bought Midford Castle near Bath, England, an 18th-century "sham castle" built in the shape of an ace of clubs. Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties and tax issues, Cage eventually sold both properties. Another famous castle-owner is Johnny Depp, who reportedly owns a massive estate in the South of France that resembles a small Provençal village, as well as a castle-like mansion in West Hollywood. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie famously purchased Château Miraval in Correns, France, which includes a sprawling vineyard and a massive historic residence where they were married. More recently, actors like Benedict Cumberbatch and Kit Harington have been linked to historic English manor houses and estates that carry the architectural weight of castles. Owning a castle is often seen as the ultimate Hollywood status symbol, though the maintenance costs frequently turn these "dream homes" into financial nightmares.
