Disney’s Planes (2013) is rated G, but child development experts generally recommend it for children aged 6 and older. While the movie is a spin-off of the Cars franchise and features colorful, anthropomorphic characters, it contains significantly more "intense" sequences than its predecessor. Specifically, there are scenes depicting war-time combat, where a character recounts a traumatic memory of his squadron being shot down in flames. There are also high-stakes racing accidents, including a scene where the protagonist, Dusty Crophopper, crashes into the ocean and is nearly lost. For toddlers under 5, these scenes can be frightening or difficult to process. However, for primary-school-aged children, the movie provides a positive message about overcoming fear and physical limitations. Parents should be aware of mild "potty humor" and some romantic innuendo between the planes, but otherwise, it is a safe, family-friendly choice for kids who have outgrown the simplest cartoons but aren't yet ready for more mature action films.
