What are coach seats like on Amtrak?

Coach class features wide, comfortable reclining seats with ample legroom. There is also a fold-down tray, individual reading light, and a 120v electric outlet at each seat. Other onboard amenities include restrooms in each coach, overhead baggage storage and complimentary WiFi.

Coach seats on Amtrak in 2026 are surprisingly spacious, often compared more to international business class on an airline than to a standard economy seat. Unlike airplanes, there are no middle seats; the configuration is usually 2x2. Each seat features a significant amount of legroom (roughly 39–42 inches), allowing even tall passengers to stretch out fully. The seats recline deeply and come equipped with a fold-down tray table, a footrest, and, on long-distance routes, a leg rest that swings up for sleeping. You will also find individual reading lights and at least two 120V power outlets per pair of seats. In 2026, Amtrak is rolling out the new Airo and Venture carriages, which feature modernized leather-style upholstery, improved lumbar support, and faster onboard Wi-Fi. While they are comfortable for daytime travel, passengers on overnight trips in Coach often bring their own blankets and pillows, as the cabin remains brightly lit at stops and there is no "lie-flat" option like in a Roomette or Bedroom.
