Ecotourism is built on a foundation of responsible travel to natural areas, and while various organizations have slightly different lists, the four core principles established by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) are: 1. Minimize Impact, 2. Build Awareness, 3. Provide Financial Benefits for Conservation, and 4. Empower Local Communities. "Minimize Impact" refers to designing and operating facilities that have a low physical, social, and behavioral footprint on the environment. "Build Awareness" involves educating both visitors and hosts about the cultural and environmental significance of the destination to foster respect. "Provide Financial Benefits" ensures that the revenue generated from tourism goes directly toward the protection of biodiversity and the management of natural parks. Finally, "Empower Local Communities" means that ecotourism must provide direct financial benefits and decision-making power to the local people, ensuring that they are active participants in—and beneficiaries of—the tourism economy, rather than just observers of it.
