For the most consistent sunshine and "perfect" beach weather, the best months to visit Costa Rica are December through April, known as the dry season or "verano." During this time, the Pacific coast is almost guaranteed to be hot and sunny, making it ideal for surfing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Within this window, February and March are often cited as the peak months because the landscapes are still lush from the previous rains but the skies are clear. If you prefer to avoid the high-season crowds and prices, the "Green Season" transition months of May and June are excellent; you’ll experience afternoon tropical showers, but the mornings are usually sunny and the national parks are much quieter. It is important to note that the Caribbean coast (Tortuguero) follows a different pattern and is actually at its driest and most beautiful in September and October, which happens to be the rainiest time for the rest of the country.
