What are the different types of IDP?

There are two primary types of identity providers: Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and Single-Sign On (SSO). SAML is an XML based markup language used for authentication via identity federation.

There are three primary types of International Driving Permits (IDP), each governed by a different international convention: the 1926, the 1949, and the 1968 permits. The type you need in 2026 depends entirely on which convention your destination country recognizes. The 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is the most common and is accepted in over 100 countries, including the USA, UK, Australia, and India. The 1968 Vienna Convention IDP is required for many European countries like Italy, France, and Germany. The 1926 Paris Convention IDP is rare but still required in a handful of countries like Mexico and Somalia. A common "pro-tip" is to check the specific requirements of the country you are visiting; for example, if you are driving across several European borders, you might actually need both the 1949 and 1968 versions to be fully legal. An IDP is always a supplement to, not a replacement for, your valid home driver's license and must be presented alongside it.
