What big birds are found in Ireland?

Ireland is home to 11 species of raptor and the UK 15. Some of the most visible include the common buzzard, sparrow hawks, kestrels and peregrine falcons (the fastest moving animal on earth). Merlin's and Goshawks too can occasionally be seen but can be difficult to identify to the untrained eye.

Ireland is home to several impressive large bird species, most notably the Mute Swan, which is one of the heaviest flying birds in the world and a common sight on Irish waterways. In terms of birds of prey, the Golden Eagle, White-tailed Sea Eagle, and Red Kite have all been successfully reintroduced to the Irish landscape over the last two decades. The White-tailed Sea Eagle, with a wingspan of up to 2.4 meters, is particularly striking near the coastal regions of Kerry and Cork. Other "big" residents include the Grey Heron, often seen standing motionless in rivers, and the Common Buzzard, which has made a massive comeback and is frequently seen soaring over motorways. For those near the coast, the Gannet is Ireland's largest seabird, famous for its dramatic high-speed dives into the Atlantic. In 2026, conservation efforts continue to protect these giants, ensuring they remain a vital and visible part of Ireland's rich biodiversity.
