As of late 2025 and into 2026, Southwest Airlines has transitioned its famous boarding process to better accommodate its shift toward assigned seating. The airline now uses Boarding Groups 1 through 8. In this new system, passengers are assigned a group number based on their seat location, fare type, and loyalty status. For example, Groups 1 and 2 are typically reserved for passengers who purchased "Extra Legroom" seats, "Choice Extra" fares, or hold A-List Preferred status. Groups 3 through 5 include A-List members and Rapid Rewards Credit Card holders, while Groups 6 through 8 consist of those with standard "Choice" or "Basic" fares who did not receive an earlier priority. This 2026 update replaces the old "A, B, C" group system with numbers 1–60. Now, the digital screens at the gate will display your specific group number (1–8) when it is time to line up, ensuring an orderly flow that prioritizes those in premium seats and loyal frequent flyers first.
