What buses can I use my bus pass on in Scotland?

Your National Entitlement Card gives you free travel throughout Scotland on nearly all local registered and long-distance scheduled bus services. Only a few services, such as premium-fare night buses and City Sightseeing buses, do not accept the card.

Where You Can Use It

  1. All Local Buses – Valid on all registered local bus services in Scotland, including those operated by: - Lothian Buses (Edinburgh & East) - First Bus (multiple regions) - McGill’s (West) - Stagecoach (nationwide) - Xplore Dundee - Highland Country Buses - Plus many other smaller, independent operators.

  2. Long-Distance & Express Services – Includes most express coaches, such as: - Citylink and Megabus services (when operated by Stagecoach or other participating operators). - Important note: On some long-distance routes (especially cross-border to England), you may need to pay a small concession fare or have restrictions during peak times. Always check with the operator before traveling.

  3. Community Transport – Some community-run services also accept the pass, but it’s best to confirm in advance.

When You Can Use It

  • Ages 60+: Free travel anytime on buses.
  • Disabled Persons (of any age): Free travel anytime on buses.
  • Young Persons (Aged 5–21): Free travel on buses with a Young Scot NEC (under 22s scheme). No time restrictions.

English bus passes are not accepted in Scotland and vice versa. Only passes issued by City of Edinburgh Council work on the trams as they're funded by the council. Other Scottish passes aren't accepted on the trams. We have our own Scottish bus passes so I'm afraid your ones are not valid.
