Here’s a list of items you cannot bring to the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, based on the National Park Service (NPS) security policies. These rules are strictly enforced for safety and preservation.
Prohibited Items:
- All weapons (including firearms, knives, pepper spray, stun guns, martial arts weapons)
- Explosives or flammable items
- Large bags, suitcases, or backpacks – Bags larger than 18” x 16” x 8” are not permitted. Lockers are not available, so you must leave oversized bags elsewhere.
- Tripods, monopods, or large professional photography equipment (without a permit)
- Drones (unmanned aircraft systems)
- Selfie sticks
- Food and beverages – except for water in a sealed bottle. (Note: Food is available for purchase on the islands.)
- Alcohol
- Pets (service animals are permitted)
- Bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, scooters
- Marking instruments (like spray paint, permanent markers)
- Any item intended for sale or distribution
Important Security Process:
All visitors must pass through an airport-style security screening before boarding the ferry. Prohibited items will be confiscated and not returned.
Strongly Recommended:
- Travel light. Bring only essentials.
- Carry a small bag or backpack within the size limit.
- Bring water in a sealed bottle, especially in summer.
