Before passengers board in 2026, cabin crew perform a rigorous Safety and Emergency Equipment (SEP) check to ensure the aircraft is airworthy and prepared for any crisis. This includes verifying that every life vest is present and sealed under the seats, checking that portable oxygen bottles (POB) are pressurized between 1800-2000 PSI, and ensuring Halon fire extinguishers have their safety pins intact and gauges "in the green." They also inspect the flashlights for a red blinking status light, verify that the Protective Breathing Equipment (PBE) humidity indicators are blue, and test the megaphone and PA system. Beyond equipment, they perform a "security sweep" of overhead bins and seat pockets for unauthorized items and verify that the catering and medical kits (AED/First Aid) are sealed and unexpired. This phase is critical because once the aircraft is at 35,000 feet, missing or faulty equipment cannot be replaced. The crew must also confirm that all jumpseats and harnesses are functional, as their own safety is paramount for managing a successful evacuation if needed.
