The Z train (along with the J train) in the New York City Subway system is represented by the color brown. This color is officially known as "Terra Cotta" and is used for all services that run on the BMT Nassau Street Line in Lower Manhattan. The Z operates as a "rush-hour skip-stop" service between Jamaica Center in Queens and Broad Street in Manhattan. Because it shares the same "trunk line" with the J train, both use the brown "bullet" or emblem. In 2026, the Z remains one of the few "skip-stop" pairs left in the system, where it skips certain stations that the J stops at (and vice versa) during peak hours to speed up the commute. If you are looking at a subway map, the brown line is easily distinguishable from the blue (A/C/E), orange (B/D/F/M), or yellow (N/Q/R/W) lines. Interestingly, the color brown was chosen for this line in 1979 as part of a massive system-wide color-coding effort to make the complex network of former independent rail companies easier for tourists and locals to navigate.
