The island of Saint Martin is unique for being divided between two nations, each with its own official currency. On the French side (Saint-Martin), the official currency is the Euro (€), reflecting its status as an overseas collectivity of France. On the Dutch side (Sint Maarten), a significant change occurred on April 1, 2025: the Netherlands Antillean Guilder was replaced by the Caribbean Guilder (XCG). This new currency is pegged to the U.S. Dollar at a stable rate of 1.79. Despite these official currencies, the U.S. Dollar ($) is the "de facto" currency across the entire island and is widely accepted by almost all businesses, from luxury boutiques to local street vendors. Most prices are listed in both the local currency and USD, and it is common to pay in dollars and receive change in either dollars or the local guilder/euro. Travelers are generally advised to carry some U.S. Dollars for smaller transactions and use credit cards for larger purchases, as they are accepted in most tourist areas on both the French and Dutch sides.
