The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood officially replaced two major former attractions: the Gibson Amphitheatre and the Adventures of Curious George water play area. The Gibson Amphitheatre was a legendary 6,189-seat indoor concert venue that had hosted world-class performers for nearly 40 years before its final show in September 2013. Its demolition made way for the massive footprint required for Hogwarts Castle and the "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" attraction. The Adventures of Curious George was a colorful, multi-story outdoor play area popular with families, featuring water sprayers and foam ball pits; its removal provided the space for the "Hogsmeade" village and the "Flight of the Hippogriff" junior coaster. This major redevelopment, which opened in April 2016, transformed a significant portion of the park's "Upper Lot," moving Universal Studios Hollywood away from its traditional studio-tour roots and toward a more modern, immersive "theme park" model that rivals the scale and detail of its sister location in Orlando.
