What diseases qualify for Make-A-Wish?

*Critical illnesses include, but are not restricted to: childhood cancers, certain types of muscular dystrophy, certain neurological or genetic diseases, cardiac disorders, renal failure and traumatic injuries. Please speak with us or contact your doctor for more information.

To qualify for a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2026, a child must be between the ages of 2½ and 18 and have been diagnosed with a critical illness—specifically a "progressive, degenerative, or malignant condition" that is deemed life-threatening by a physician. Contrary to popular belief, a condition does not have to be "terminal" to qualify; it must simply be "critical." Common qualifying categories include various forms of Cancer (leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors), complex Heart Conditions, Cystic Fibrosis, certain types of Muscular Dystrophy, and advanced Neurological Disorders like severe cerebral palsy or intractable epilepsy. Each case is reviewed by a medical professional to determine if the child's daily life is significantly impacted by the life-threatening nature of the illness. The goal of the foundation is to provide hope and joy to children facing these immense medical hurdles, and the eligibility criteria are designed to be as inclusive as possible for any child undergoing treatment for a truly life-altering and dangerous medical diagnosis.
