What do I need to know before going to Montserrat?

Passports and visa: U.S. citizens must have a valid U.S. passport at time of entry. NOTE: Generally, all U.S. citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport when traveling to Montserrat, as well as proof of anticipated departure from the island.

Before visiting Montserrat, Spain, in 2026, the most important thing to know is that timed-entry tickets are now required to see the Black Madonna (La Moreneta) and to visit the Throne Room of the Basilica. It is highly recommended to book these well in advance through the official monastery website. To reach the mountain from Barcelona, you should take the R5 train from Plaça Espanya; you must choose between the Aeri (cable car) or the Cremallera (rack railway) at the time of ticket purchase, as they are separate operators with different stations (Aeri de Montserrat vs. Monistrol de Montserrat). For hikers, the Sant Jeroni trail offers the highest viewpoint but requires 3-4 hours of moderate effort. Also, keep in mind that the famous Escolania (Boys' Choir) usually performs at 1:00 PM on weekdays, but they do not perform on Saturdays or during certain school holidays, so checking their specific 2026 schedule is essential for planning your day trip.

We recommend going from Monday to Friday; weekends are jam-packed with many local people and too many cars. If you can only go to Montserrat on the weekend, we recommend using the cable car or the cogwheel train to arrive from the town at the bottom of the mountain and have our driver pick us up to return to Barcelona.
