What do you wear tubing in San Marcos?

One of the best ways to have a great float is to bring less. Anything you bring you risk losing, so keep that in mind. Besides a swimsuit, you may want a hat and sunglasses. Other than that, have a shirt to put on if you're getting too much sun.

When tubing the San Marcos River in 2026, the key is to prioritize sun protection and foot safety. You should wear a swimsuit or quick-dry athletic wear; avoid denim or heavy cotton, as they become heavy and chafe when wet. Water shoes or sandals with a heel strap (like Chacos or Tevas) are absolutely essential, as the riverbed is rocky and slippery; flip-flops are notoriously lost to the current within the first five minutes. A wide-brimmed hat and polarized sunglasses (secured with a strap like Croakies) will protect you from the intense Texas sun. It is also highly recommended to wear a long-sleeved rash guard if you have fair skin, as you will be exposed for 3 to 7 hours depending on the water flow. Don't forget to apply water-resistant sunscreen to the tops of your thighs and feet, as these areas are most exposed while sitting in the tube. Many locals also wear a "waterproof pouch" around their necks for their ID and keys. If you plan to stop at the "Lions Club" or other local spots, having a dry shirt or cover-up in a dry bag is a smart move for when you finish your float.
