Medallion status benefits. All Medallion tiers offer priority boarding and check-in, and all except Silver get priority security and baggage access. All tiers also receive complimentary seat upgrade eligibility, free checked bags and bonus SkyMiles, with higher tiers offering correspondingly greater benefits.
In short, Delta SkyMiles is the rewards currency you earn and spend to book award flights on Delta and its partners, while MQMs help you earn elite status with Delta but cannot be redeemed for flights.
Delta MQMs have zero value for booking flights. Instead, they're all about building Delta status. Unlike SkyMiles, you earn MQMs based on the actual distance flown. You generally earn 1 MQM for every mile you fly with Delta, but first-class flyers earn up to 2 MQMs per actual mile flown.
As a Gold Medallion elite, you get some decent mid-range benefits when flying Delta and its SkyTeam partners, including free checked bags, higher rewards earning rates and unlimited complimentary upgrades, to name a few.
MQMs are Medallion Qualifying Miles. You earn these based on how far you fly and the fare class of your ticket. With regular economy class tickets, you earn 1 MQM per mile flown. For higher classes, it may be 1.5 or 2 MQMs per mile flown.
Full fare First and Business Class tickets (F, J fares) are eligible for a 100% MQM bonus. Discounted First, Delta Premium Select, Business, and Premium Main Cabin tickets (P, A, G, C, D, I, Z, Y, and B fares) are eligible for a 50% MQM bonus.
(1) Flights and itineraries eligible for MQMs will earn a minimum of 500 MQMs per segment. (2) “Distance flown” means the calculated distance between the origin and destination, as determined by Delta in its sole discretion, regardless of the actual distance traveled on any individual flight.
Further, you can spend $25,000 on either the Delta Platinum or Delta Reserve cards to earn an MQD waiver for Silver, Gold and Platinum status. Or, you can spend $250,000 for a Diamond MQD waiver. This completely waives the MQD requirement, meaning you only need to meet the MQS or MQM requirement to earn status.
MQMs can be kept by the Basic Card Member or gifted to someone else. MQM gift recipients must have a valid SkyMiles account. If a MQM gift recipient is not designated within 30 days of the MQMs being made available, the MQMs will be deposited in the Basic Card Member's SkyMiles account.
Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after December 9, 2021 for flights departing on or after January 1, 2022, are not eligible to earn miles in the SkyMiles Program or earn credit towards Medallion Status (meaning not eligible for MQM, MQS or MQD earn).
