What does 30 minute layover mean?

A layover is a broad term that means any connection between flights. This could include a stop as short as 30 minutes (depending upon the airport) or as long as four hours (or up to 23 hours and 59 minutes on international flights). Airline crew use this term, slightly differently.

But usually, when traveling internationally, the MCT is at least an hour. It can go up to 2 hours in large airports requiring a change of terminal.

It varies. They will often wait a little while, especially if it's the last flight of the day and even moreso if there are multiple passengers making the same connection. I've had Delta wait for me after inbound connection delays on several occasions.

It's really hard to put an exact number on how long you need for your layover. At a minimum, I'd say you should plan for one hour for domestic layovers and two hours for international layovers. But this is not a hard, fast rule! If you have to go through security again on a domestic layover, you might need more time.

During layovers, your aircraft may land at the connecting city to drop off and pick up new passengers. Sometimes, layovers require you to stay in the aircraft until it departs. Other times, you must get off the plane and head to a new aircraft at the airport.

If you can't avoid connecting, don't book the shortest layover, because you'll be building in stress and the possibility of missing your flight. A one-hour layover is not enough anymore. Thirty minutes, not a chance.

Skipping the first leg of a connecting flight is usually a bad idea. Whenever a passenger doesn't show up for the first leg of a connecting flight, the airline cancels all the other upcoming flights on the same ticket for that passenger. This also applies to any other leg of the flight that isn't the last one.

35 minutes must be the absolute minimum connection time, and as such is very risky especially for an international flight. If the international flight is to YVR then not so bad but if it's the ANA flight to Tokyo or a similar long haul then it's touch and go. Don't think about Duty free. Go straight to your flight.
