What does Asakusa Kannon mean?

Senso-ji, is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. It is Tokyo's oldest temple, and one of its most significant. Formerly associated with the Tendai sect of Buddhism, it became independent after World War II.

"Asakusa Kannon" is the popular name for Senso-ji, which is Tokyo's oldest and most significant Buddhist temple located in the Asakusa district. The name specifically refers to the deity to whom the temple is dedicated: Kannon Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Compassion (Avalokiteśvara). According to legend, the temple was founded in the year 628 after two brothers fished a small golden statue of Kannon out of the Sumida River. Even though they returned the statue to the water, it miraculously kept coming back to them, leading to the construction of the temple to house the sacred relic. Therefore, "Asakusa Kannon" literally identifies the temple by its location (Asakusa) and its primary object of worship (Kannon). Visitors today enter through the iconic Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) and walk down the Nakamise shopping street to reach the main hall, where people offer incense and prayers to the "Goddess of Mercy" for healing, protection, and general good fortune.
