What does Disneyland pump into the air?

Disney harnesses the power of smell to create pleasant memories of your day in the parks. To do so, Disney uses machines called smellitzers to push a certain fragrance into the air around you.

Disneyland uses specialized scent projectors known as "Smellitzers" to pump carefully curated fragrances into the air to enhance the guest experience. This "sensory marketing" is designed to trigger nostalgia and cravings. On Main Street, U.S.A., you will almost always smell fresh-baked vanilla cookies or popcorn, even if the local bakeries aren't currently baking. Inside specific attractions, the scents become even more thematic: Pirates of the Caribbean features a distinct "damp, musty" smell (often attributed to the use of bromine in the water), while Soarin’ Around the World pumps in the scents of orange groves, sea breeze, and fresh grass as you fly over different landscapes. These scents are precisely timed and directed to ensure that your sense of smell reinforces the visual storytelling of each "land" or ride.
