What does rope drop mean at EPCOT?

"Rope drop" is Disney terminology for the time when a theme park, or part of a theme park, opens for the day. Historically, when a Walt Disney World theme park is closed, Disney often used ropes stretched across the entrance to prevent guests from coming in; thus, when the park is opened the rope is "dropped."

"Rope drop" is a Disney enthusiast term for arriving at the park before it officially opens to be among the first guests through the gates. At EPCOT in 2026, "rope drop" is a strategic maneuver used to ride high-demand attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind or Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure with the shortest possible wait times. The term comes from the old practice where Cast Members would hold a literal rope to keep the crowd back until the clock struck the opening hour. For Disney Resort guests, "Early Theme Park Entry" allows them to "rope drop" 30 minutes before off-site guests, which is a massive advantage. At EPCOT, there are two "rope drop" points: the Main Entrance (near Spaceship Earth) and the International Gateway (between the UK and France pavilions). If you "rope drop" correctly, you can often finish two or three major rides before the "midday rush" arrives at 11:00 AM, allowing you to spend the rest of your day enjoying the World Showcase at a much more relaxed pace.
