Barbados is a tropical paradise with a diverse array of exotic fruits that are central to the local diet. One of the most famous is the Bajan Cherry (Barbados Cherry), which is prized for its extremely high Vitamin C content and is often made into a tart, refreshing juice. You will also find Breadfruit, which is a starchy staple usually roasted or boiled and served as a side dish, similar to a potato. Sapodilla, a brown, grainy fruit with a brown-sugar sweetness, is a local favorite, along with Sugar Apples (Custard Apples) which have a creamy, white interior. Other common fruits include Soursop, frequently used in smoothies and ice creams, and the Barbados Gooseberry, which is much more sour than its European namesake and often stewed into jams. Of course, traditional tropical staples like mangoes (including varieties such as Pawi and Graham), papayas (known locally as pawpaws), and golden apples are abundant. Most of these fruits are seasonal, with the peak variety appearing during the wetter summer months, though bananas and coconuts are available year-round.
