The MV Princess of the Stars was a large Filipino passenger ferry that met a tragic end on June 21, 2008. While sailing from Manila to Cebu, the vessel encountered the massive waves and winds of Typhoon Fengshen (Typhoon Frank). Despite the severe weather warnings, the ship continued its voyage and eventually capsized off the coast of San Fernando, Romblon. Out of the approximately 850 passengers and crew onboard, only about 50 survived, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters in Philippine history. The tragedy was compounded when it was discovered that the ship was illegally carrying a large shipment of toxic pesticides (endosulfan), which delayed search and recovery efforts due to the risk of chemical contamination. The wreck remained a source of controversy for years, leading to strict new maritime safety regulations in the Philippines and the eventual permanent suspension of the shipping line, Sulpicio Lines, from carrying passengers.
