The tragedy was compounded when it was discovered that the ship was illegally carrying a large shipment of toxic pesticides (endosulfan), which delayed search and recovery efforts due to the risk of chemical contamination. The wreck remained a source of controversy for years, leading to strict new maritime safety regulations in the Philippines and the eventual permanent suspension of the shipping line, Sulpicio Lines, from carrying passengers.
