Todd Beamer was a 32-year-old software account manager and a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. After the aircraft was hijacked by four terrorists, Beamer and several other passengers, including Mark Bingham, Tom Burnett, and Jeremy Glick, learned of the earlier attacks on the World Trade Center via in-flight phone calls. Realizing that their plane was also intended to be a weapon—likely targeting the U.S. Capitol or the White House—they decided to fight back. Beamer is famously remembered for his final words, "Are you guys ready? Okay. Let's roll," which were overheard by a GTE airphone supervisor as the group began their assault on the cockpit. During the ensuing struggle, the hijackers purposely crashed the Boeing 757 into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to prevent the passengers from breaching the cockpit. All 44 people on board, including Todd Beamer and the hijackers, perished in the crash. His actions, along with those of his fellow passengers, are credited with preventing a second catastrophic strike on Washington, D.C.
