What happens if it rains at Great America?

What happens if it rains during my visit? Some attractions may close in inclement weather until conditions permit safe operation. Please enjoy a live show, meal or shopping until such weather passes. California's Great America cannot issue rainchecks or refunds for inclement weather.

The park contains all types of activities, many of which are not dependent upon good weather, including indoor shows, games and arcades. While some rides and shows may close due to rain or wind, these rides and shows are opened as soon as the weather clears. Refunds and rainchecks are not offered.

Most operations will shut down their rides when lightning is in the immediate vicinity. As far as rain, it depends upon how safely the individual rides can operate under wet conditions since speed and braking are effected.

Roaring over the tracks after a rain causes no real threat to the ride itself, with a major exception: Brakes! Rides with friction-type brakes often do not suffice in stopping the train during a steady rain. (remember ? Lack of friction is what makes the ride faster), but it also makes the friction brakes slower.

We have so many delicious food options within the park! No outside food, beverages or coolers may be brought into Six Flags Great America. Exceptions are made for guests with special dietary needs including certain food allergies and baby food/formula.

Glass is bad news when it breaks, which is why glass bottles are not allowed inside the parks. Bring an empty water bottle into the park and you can fill it at a water fountain. All other kinds of drinks must be purchased on-site.

Usually when the rain stops, the ride will resume as soon as it is safe to do so. Do know that each ride has different conditions in which it can operate depending on many factors so some of them won't be able to operate even if it's close to raining while some will start up as soon as the rain stops.

Some rides and shows will close temporarily during electrical storms, heavy rains, high winds and other severe weather conditions. As soon as conditions permit safe operation, these attractions will re-open. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom does not issue rain checks or refunds.

All amusement parks have lightening detectors that scan 15 to 30 miles away. As soon as there is a strike within in that range all tall rides are shut down. Most are shut down until there are no strikes within that range for 30 to 45 minutes. These rides are grounded to diffuse a strike.

Other health conditions can make going on high-speed rides unsafe, including pregnancy, recent surgery, heart problems, high blood pressure and aneurysms, as well as the influence of drugs or alcohol.
