If you miss your scheduled Narita Express (N'EX) train, the outcome depends on the type of ticket you hold. Because the N'EX is an all-reserved-seat service, your specific seat reservation is technically void once the train departs. However, JR East policy generally allows you to use that same ticket to board a later N'EX train on the same day, but you will not have a guaranteed seat. You must stand in the vestibule area or sit in an unassigned seat until a passenger with a valid reservation for that seat arrives. If you have a JR Pass, you simply go back to the ticket office or a reserved seat machine and book a new seat on the next available train for free. if you bought a regular paper ticket or used a digital Suica/Pasmo, you can go to the "Midori-no-madoguchi" (ticket office) and a staff member can often help re-issue a reservation for a small fee or for free depending on the fare type. If you are in a rush, you can also opt to take the "Keisei Skyliner" (if at the airport) or a standard rapid train, but these are different companies and would require a new ticket purchase.
