What happens when a river flows into a lake?

The river water will then either form an underflow or an interflow within the lake. However, if the river water is lighter than the receiving water, as is typically the case when fresh river water flows into the sea, the river water will float along the surface of the receiving water as an overflow.

When the temperatures drop, the top layer of water starts to get colder as well. It inevitably reaches a point in which it becomes denser than the water underneath, therefore causing it to sink. During this process, the bottom layer of water starts shifting to the top – hence the term turning over.
