What happens when you arrive at Heathrow?

After Customs you'll walk through a World Duty Free shop and then find yourself in the arrivals hall. The arrivals hall can be very crowded with lots of people waiting to greet arriving passengers. If you have flown in from another UK airport you will not need to go through Passport Control.

Arriving at London Heathrow is a structured process that varies slightly depending on whether you are arriving from a domestic or international location. After deplaning, you will follow the yellow "Arrivals" signs toward Immigration and Passport Control. If you have a biometric passport from the UK, EU, USA, Canada, or several other countries, you can use the e-Gates for a faster automated entry; otherwise, you must join the manual queue to see an officer. Once through immigration, you proceed to the Baggage Reclaim hall, where screens will indicate which carousel is handling your flight's luggage. After collecting your bags, you pass through Customs; you should take the Green Channel if you have nothing to declare, or the Red Channel if you do. Finally, you emerge into the Arrivals Hall, where you can find transportation options. These include the high-speed Heathrow Express to Paddington, the Elizabeth Line, or the London Underground (Piccadilly Line). You can also find taxi ranks, bus terminals, and car rental desks clearly signposted throughout the terminal.

The fastest way to pass immigration quickly is to use the electronic gates wherever possible. I recently passed through Terminal 5 in less than two minutes this way. U.S. passport holders have been able to use U.K. ePassport gates at major U.K. airports including all London Heathrow terminals since 2019.
