What is a quiet ride car?

The QuietRide car is the first car of trains with three or more cars open to passengers. Seating in the car is on a first-come, first-served basis. The conductor can direct you to the car if you have a question.

Amtrak is proud to have introduced the concept of a quiet car into the transportation industry in 2001, beginning as a pilot program in 2000. Phone calls are not allowed, passengers are asked to limit conversations, and low overhead lighting is used to create a calming atmosphere.

Acela Business Class consists of five cars on the six-car train. The Quiet Car is located in Car 2 and the Cafe Cafe is located in Car 4. Most of the seats are rotated to face forward, except for the seats at the conference tables and at the bulkhead.

No cell phone use is allowed, no audible noise is supposed to emerge from devices and there is no talking in anything above a whisper. Riders in the Quiet Car are told to maintain a “library-like atmosphere,” and technically speaking, you're not really even supposed to talk in a library voice for very long.

Coach class is offered on every Amtrak train and features wide, reclining seats with ample legroom, no middle seat option and at-seat trays, reading lights and electric outlets. Restrooms are located in each car.
