A seasickness bracelet, often referred to as an acupressure band or by the brand name Sea-Band, is a knitted elasticated wristband that operates on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. Each band features a small, hard plastic stud sewn into the inside, which is designed to apply constant pressure to the Nei-Kuan (P6) acupressure point located on the inner wrist. This specific point is believed to help relieve nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness, pregnancy, or chemotherapy. To work effectively, the band must be positioned correctly: about three finger-breadths down from the crease of the wrist, between the two central tendons. Because they are drug-free, they do not cause the drowsiness or dry mouth often associated with anti-nausea medications like scopolamine or dimenhydrinate. While scientific studies on their efficacy are mixed—with some suggesting a strong placebo effect—many travelers swear by them as a low-cost, reusable, and side-effect-free way to manage "mal de mer" during cruises, boat trips, or even long car rides on winding roads.
