What is A320 competitor?

The world's two leading narrowbody jets are variations of the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320.

The primary and most famous competitor to the Airbus A320 family is the Boeing 737 series. This rivalry is the most intense "duopoly" in aviation history, with both aircraft serving as the workhorses for short-to-medium-haul flights globally. Specifically, the Airbus A320neo (New Engine Option) competes directly with the Boeing 737 MAX. While Boeing held the lead for decades, as of late 2025, the A320 family has officially surpassed the 737 as the most-delivered commercial jetliner ever. Other emerging "secondary" competitors include the COMAC C919 from China, which is beginning to gain traction in the Asian market, and the Embraer E-Jet E2 series from Brazil, which competes with the smaller variants like the A319neo or the A220. However, for major global airlines, the choice usually comes down to the A320 for its wider cabin or the 737 for its established ecosystem.

It's called the PTU, or Power Transfer Unit. It's basically an extra hydraulic pump that assists the system as necessary, and also does a self-test during engine start. But, it's very loud and people don't like strange, loud noises on airplanes, so I understand how it can be disconcerting!
