What is appropriate to wear in Japan?

Men usually wear a shirt and casual blazer or a jacket, and trousers. Ties are not required. Choose subdued colours such as black, white, navy or beige, or if you wear patterns, make sure they are subtle, such as stripes or dots. Women usually wear a shirt and cardigan or jacket, knee-length skirt or trousers.

As a tourist, it is unnecessary to wear business attire, but dress nicely, as the Japanese women do not dress in grubby clothes. Jeans are seen infrequently, shorts rarely, unless they are longer length walking type shorts. Most women wore crop length pants. The Japanese women do not wear t-shirts as we do in the US.

Try to be mindful of the type of shoes you're wearing, as certain shoes, such as sandals, might not be allowed in some indoor spaces. If you're given slippers at the entrance to a building remember to wear them inside only! We know they're comfy but these aren't meant for sightseeing or as a souvenir!
