What is better OMNY or MetroCard?

A Statistical Analysis. TL;DR, (coincidentally) OMNY is better until you average 12 rides per week, then a 30-day unlimited card is better.

In 2026, OMNY (One Metro New York) is the superior choice for almost every traveler because the iconic MetroCard is being officially retired. OMNY allows you to "tap and go" using your own contactless credit/debit card, smartphone, or wearable, eliminating the need to wait at a vending machine or worry about a "bad swipe." The biggest advantage of OMNY is automatic fare capping: once you reach 12 taps (approx. $34) in a 7-day period using the same device, every subsequent ride that week is free. This provides the same value as a Weekly Unlimited MetroCard without the upfront commitment. As of January 1, 2026, the MTA has ceased the sale of new MetroCards, and while existing cards can still be used for a short transition period, they cannot be refilled. Switching to OMNY is a high-value move that saves you the $1 "new card fee" and ensures you aren't stuck with a magnetic stripe card that the system no longer supports.

Since MetroCards are still available until the end of 2024, so until then, it may not be worth buying an OMNY card, which costs $4 more than a MetroCard. On the other hand, if you use a pay-per-ride MetroCard, you do not get to take advantage of the OMNY fare cap mentioned above.
