Since January 1, 2023, the official currency of Croatia is the Euro (€). The previous currency, the Croatian Kuna (HRK), is no longer legal tender and cannot be used for payments. In 2026, all transactions across the country—from high-end hotels in Dubrovnik to local markets in Split—are conducted solely in Euros. Banknotes are available in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 euros, while coins consist of 1 and 2 euros and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents. While major tourist hubs widely accept credit cards like Visa and Mastercard, it is still advisable to carry small amounts of Euro cash for "off the beaten track" island travel, small cafes, or tipping local guides and boat crews.
