What is economy basic on British Airways?

Basic fares are ideal when you want the lowest possible fare. You'll still have an allocated seat when you check in and it includes our generous hand baggage allowance. With Basic fares, you have the option of paying to add a checked bag, choose your seat, or other extras via Manage My Booking.

Economy Basic is British Airways' "hand-baggage only" fare, designed for travelers who want the lowest possible price and do not need to check a bag. In 2026, this fare allows you to bring two pieces of hand luggage: one standard cabin bag (max 56 x 45 x 25cm) and one small personal item like a laptop bag or handbag (max 40 x 30 x 15cm), with a combined weight limit of up to 23kg. However, checked baggage is not included; if you decide you need a bag later, you must pay a fee (approx. £35–£80 online or up to £95 at the airport). Other restrictions include no advanced seat selection (you are assigned a seat at check-in) and the ticket is generally non-changeable and non-refundable. You still receive the same onboard service as standard Economy—including snacks and drinks on long-haul—but the fare is stripped of all "extras" to compete with low-cost carriers like EasyJet and Ryanair. It is perfect for short weekend hops where a carry-on is all you need.

British Airways (BA) offers several economy class experiences, depending on the aircraft and route. It’s important to know that they have different names for their long-haul and short-haul services.

Here’s a breakdown of what “Economy Basic” typically means on British Airways:

1. Short-Haul Flights (within Europe)

On shorter flights, BA’s most restrictive economy fare is called “Basic” (often sold as the cheapest fare class, like “Euro Traveller Basic”). Ticket Flexibility: This is a non-refundable ticket. Changes or cancellations are usually not allowed, or they incur a fee plus any difference in fare. Seat Selection: You cannot select a standard seat for free in advance. A seat is assigned at check-in (often for free, but you can’t choose it). You can pay to select a specific seat from the time of booking. Baggage: It typically includes: Hand Luggage: One personal item (handbag/laptop bag) plus one cabin bag (max 23kg, with specific size limits) that must fit in the overhead locker. Hold Luggage: This is the key difference. Basic fares on short-haul flights DO NOT include a checked bag. You must pay an additional fee to check a bag. Boarding: You will be in one of the last boarding groups. Food & Drink: Complimentary drinks and a snack (or a proper meal on longer short-haul routes) are served on board.

2. Long-Haul Flights (e.g., to the US, Asia, Africa)

On long-haul flights, the equivalent restrictive fare is part of “World Traveller” (BA’s name for long-haul economy). The most basic tier here is often called “Basic” or is the lowest fare bucket (e.g., “World Traveller Basic”). Ticket Flexibility: Similar to short-haul – non-refundable and changes/cancellations incur fees plus fare differences. Seat Selection: Same policy: free seat assignment at check-in; pay to choose a specific seat in advance. Baggage: This is a major difference from short-haul Basic. Hand Luggage: Same allowance
