While the Concorde was the pinnacle of commercial aviation with a cruise speed of Mach 2.02 (about 2,180 km/h), several aircraft have surpassed it. The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is the most famous, holding the record for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft at Mach 3.3 (3,530 km/h). In the commercial space, the Soviet Tupolev Tu-144 was technically faster than Concorde, reaching Mach 2.29, though it was less reliable. Looking toward the future in 2026, the Boom Overture is currently in development with plans to cruise at Mach 1.7, which is slightly slower than Concorde but significantly faster than any current jet. For true "faster than Concorde" speeds today, one must look to experimental unmanned vehicles like the NASA X-43, which reached nearly Mach 9.6, or military "Hypersonic Glide Vehicles" that can exceed Mach 5 (over 6,000 km/h). Spacecraft like the Space Shuttle were the fastest of all, reaching Mach 25 during reentry.
